As part of the project “Augmented Experience of JAPANESE ART,” conceived to expand new encounters and modes of experiencing Japanese art, a video installation inspired by Scroll of Cherry Blossoms by Gyokushi Atomi—held in the collection of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo—will be presented at the Central Hall on the first floor of Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store.

Gyokushi Atomi was a Japanese-style painter active from the Meiji through the Showa periods. Renowned particularly for her depictions of cherry blossoms, she was highly esteemed by the Imperial Household and created numerous works at the request of Empress Kojun.

In conjunction with the museum’s Spring Festival, Scroll of Cherry Blossoms has been selected from among Atomi’s many cherry blossom works and reinterpreted as a moving image installation. Through a distinctive interpretation of Atomi’s blossoms, THE DYNAMICS OF DETAIL reconstructs her vision into an immersive spatial composition of sound and image, presented at Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store.

Known for its refined interiors influenced by Art Deco aesthetics, the historic department store provides an exceptional setting in which visitors can immerse themselves in large-scale moving images and experience the presence of spring with their whole bodies.
